Magic, Music, & Melanin: The PowerHer Gala Recap

Yesterday, my husband and I attended Chrysalis' PowerHer Melanin Moonlight Gala. The PowerHer Conference is a weekend-long event dedicated to celebrating and pouring into Black women. This conference also serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit The Chrysalis Program, which transforms young Black girls into confident, self-validating women. The program serves children as young as five years old through young adulthood.

What a night! It was filled with powerful energy and pure Black Magic Dopeness. It always feels amazing to be surrounded by the richness and resilience of Black excellence.

Before leaving the house, I insisted that Derrick and I take a picture because we looked so nice! I love dressing up, especially when I get to dangle from my husband’s arm.

My Honey and I ❤️

Upon arriving at the minority-owned Hampton Inn near McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, we stepped off the elevators and into the highly anticipated Pop-Up Black Woman Museum. Though not yet complete, I was already in love with what was there. The exhibit showcased rich, Black-curated art and cultural beauty regimens, including a nail tech station and a display of both old-school and modern hot combs. Do you remember the hot comb? Just thinking about it makes my neck twitch, recalling the sizzle of the comb on my roots and the heat brushing against my skin. I used to sit so still when my mom was working on my hair in the kitchen—one wrong move, and that comb would get me! These memories and more flooded my mind, reminding me of the vibrant culture that shaped me. It was a beautiful acknowledgment that every day is a good day to be a Black woman.

The Performances

After soaking in the museum experience, it was time for the show to begin! My girl from Houston, author Charlie Marcol, took the stage as our luminous host for the night. She’s the annual host of the gala, and I look forward to seeing her every year at the PowerHer Conference. She kicked off the night with a powerful entrance—“Boots on the Ground”—joined by other women, their large fans snapping open with a rhythmic crunch. With Charlie, it's always a vibe!

Next up was Del Marie, a dancer whose energy was magnetic. She even pulled participants from the audience to join in, making it even more electrifying.

We then had a spoken word performance by Jason Williams, who delivered a piece celebrating Black women and the many hats we wear. His words were a reminder of the weight we carry, the love we pour out, and the power we hold. And let me tell you, nothing is more affirming than hearing that from a Black man.

Following Jason was Robin Bobo, spoken word artist and co-owner of Bobo Enterprises. She recited a heartfelt piece dedicated to Black men, honoring the dynamic strength of Black love. I loved how she illustrated the power of love—through ups and downs, through struggles and triumphs—rooted in perseverance and fueled by devotion.

The Music & More

After a short dinner break in the hotel’s dining area, Eros, the Prince of Poetry, recited pieces reminding women to take time for themselves. He spoke about how we pour so much into others while running on empty—a message we all needed to hear. He also performed a selection from his album The LoveHer Album, which I highly recommend checking out.

Then we were blessed by the soulful vocals of Lincoln Kyle the Passionate and Mara Love. Each performed separately, blending original pieces with familiar songs. Their performances complemented each other beautifully, their melodic and sultry voices syncing effortlessly.

And last but not least, K-Love the Poet—always a joy to listen to and hug! Each time I see her, she greets me with warmth, and for some reason, her words always bring me to tears. One of her pieces was about battling the noise in your own head, a powerful reminder that sometimes, our greatest enemy is ourselves. Another poem reflected on revisiting past struggles and how, in our lowest moments, we might not yet see the evidence of our strength. Whew! That one hit deep. She also recited her famous piece on Sisterhood, honoring the friendships that shape us. I truly don’t know where I’d be without my sisters in my life. Every time K-Love touches the mic, it’s a blessing.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the PowerHer Melanin Moonlight Gala was a phenomenal experience. Today, the conference continues with a variety of workshops led by esteemed women, and the night will end with a comedy show. If you're interested, tickets are still available—grab one and treat yourself to inspiration and celebration. Because, as women, we need that.
